Which family courthouse will hear my San Diego case?

San Diego County family cases are heard at courthouses in Downtown San Diego, Vista, El Cajon, and Chula Vista. Which one applies generally depends on where the parties live and the type of case. Hiring an attorney who regularly appears at all four means less time spent learning local routines.

This is general information about California family law. It is not legal advice, and reading it creates no attorney-client relationship.

Most people I talk to from Chula Vista assume everything happens downtown. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it does not. Last month a client from Eastlake called me the night before a hearing, convinced she needed to be at the wrong building. We sorted it out in a five-minute phone call, and she arrived where she needed to be.

How do the four courthouses compare?

Courthouse areaWhere clients often liveWhat changes for you
Downtown San DiegoCentral San Diego, Mission Valley, nearby neighborhoodsParking and security lines add 30 to 45 minutes on hearing days
VistaNorth County, from Oceanside inlandAbout 40 miles from Mission Valley and the South Bay, so plan on an hour or more each way in traffic
El CajonEast CountyDifferent calendar habits than downtown
Chula VistaSouth Bay, including Otay Ranch and EastlakeCloser for many of the families I serve there

The point of the table is simple. Where your case sits affects travel time, how early you should leave, and how your attorney schedules a day. For a 8:30 a.m. calendar I tell clients to be in the security line by 7:45.

What does it cost to hire a family court attorney in San Diego?

My hourly rate is $300. A retainer for a new case typically ranges from $4,700 to $7,500, and the amount depends on the case. Those are typical figures, not a fixed quote or a guarantee of total cost.

The initial consultation is free. There is no booking calendar. You call or text, and I respond quickly.

Why does a sole practitioner matter at the courthouse?

I am the only attorney in this office. The person you speak to at the consultation is the person who appears at the hearing.

I have practiced family law exclusively for over 20 years, and I appear at the Downtown San Diego, Vista, El Cajon, and Chula Vista family courthouses. My office is in Mission Valley at 591 Camino De La Reina, so I am not tied to one building.

What should I ask before hiring?

  1. Does the attorney appear regularly at the courthouse that will hear my case?
  2. Who will handle my matter from start to finish?
  3. What are the hourly rate and the typical retainer, and are they described as estimates?
  4. How do I reach the attorney for a quick response?
