Meet Your Attorney
Brian Burkett
San Diego Family Law Attorney · 24 Years of Family-Law Practice
I am a solo practitioner focused on family law in San Diego County. My practice is devoted entirely to family matters — divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, paternity, mediation, guardianship, and restraining orders. I handle matters at all four family-law courthouses in San Diego County: Downtown (Central), Vista (North County), El Cajon (East County), and Chula Vista (South County).

My Approach
Family law is different from every other legal practice because the decisions shape the rest of your life and the lives of the people you love most. I built my practice around a simple idea: clients deserve steady representation from someone who returns their calls, explains what is happening, and treats the case with the seriousness it warrants.
Because I practice on my own, the attorney you meet at the first consultation is the attorney who handles your case from the first filing through the final order. Nothing gets handed off. Nothing gets lost in translation between a partner and an associate. You get one point of contact, and I make sure that point of contact is reliable.
I try to explain family law in plain language. California family court has its own vocabulary — petitioner, respondent, ex parte, Request for Order — and part of my job is translating that language into what it actually means for you and your family. I would rather over-explain than leave a client guessing.

- Child custody — legal and physical custody, parenting plans, and modifications.
- Child support — California guideline calculations, modification, and enforcement.
- Spousal support — temporary and long-term orders under California law.
- Paternity — establishing legal parentage through declarations, presumptions, and DNA testing.
- Mediation — as counsel or as neutral mediator, depending on the matter.
- Domestic violence — restraining orders and the family-law issues that follow.
- Guardianship — probate and juvenile guardianship of minors.
- Family court navigation — general assistance with the family court process itself.
If a matter falls outside family law, I will tell you at the first consultation and, when possible, point you to a colleague who handles it.
